Well, I set out on a similar mission myself and I did find a way to get my life back… and let me just say out the gate that getting endless lab tests and taking thyroid supplements is not a natural way to go about this… just because a thyroid support supplement says it is made with herbs it doesn’t mean it’s natural…

… because this is a common trap I see people fall into… when a conventional doctor doesn’t listen to how you feel, you turn to naturopaths and functional medicine practitioners… who are happy to listen to your symptoms and start you on a series of labs…

Sure enough, they’ll find something because for every lab, they have a supplement waiting for you to take…

Here’s some Selenium for you…

… but what they don’t tell you is that nutrients are not meant to be consumed in isolation… that’s not how food works… nutrients like Selenium need other nutrients to create balance… if you take Selenium in isolation, you will start to become deficient in other nutrients like zinc, copper, iron, iodine, Vitamin E… and it starts to make things like fatigue, hair loss, and mood worse…

So you end up having to get new labs and a stack of supplements to address each of these nutrients…

You’ve probably seen some of these thyroid support supplements that contain a variety of these minerals like selenium, iodine, copper, zinc, Ashwagandha, etc.

You know what food has all these nutrients (and more) in a way that is fully balanced, so it doesn’t create other imbalances?

Eggs…

More specifically the egg yolk… it contains everything your thyroid needs, including the raw materials to make hormones… this may catch some people by surprise because most people are told to cut out gluten, dairy and sugar…

This is where the rubber meets the road…

Cutting out gluten or dairy is a recommendation given to people who have a weak digestive system… specifically people who struggle to digest protein… because gluten and dairy have proteins that can be hard to digest…

… but have you ever seen people eat those foods and be just fine?

It’s because they have a strong digestive system…

Cutting out gluten and dairy will definitely help to reduce inflammation… inflammation is your body’s response when it can’t digest protein… but cutting out gluten doesn’t make your digestive system any stronger… it just removes foods that are hard to digest…

Doesn’t it make more sense to work on improving your digestion?

Here’s why…

How does your body make Thyroid hormone naturally?

Take the thyroid hormone T4…

The “T” stands for Tyrosine…

The “4” stands for four iodine molecules… so it’s one Tyrosine with four iodine…

Tyrosine is an amino acid… amino acids come from protein… which means that in order for your body to get the tyrosine it needs to make thyroid hormone naturally, it must have the ability to digest protein and break it down into amino acids…

This is why working on improving your protein digestion is better than cutting out gluten and dairy… now, don’t get me wrong, you may need to temporarily cut out triggering foods, but the goal is to get your digestive system to a point where it can eat every food group…

… because you need all macros for hormone production: protein, carbs, and fat.

Cutting out sugar for many people means going low carb… maybe keto or carnivore… these fads stem from the same issue… it’s a digestive issue… whether it’s gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, stomach pain… your body is letting you know that it needs help with digestion…

This is where I was when I understood this concept… I was fatigued all the time… I was barely scraping by every day… I was so exhausted I was falling asleep sitting up at my desk at work…

I started looking at natural remedies to boost my thyroid… and nothing really worked… but I understood digestion because I used to brew beer, and that’s what you do as a brewer… you take barley grain and digest the starch into sugar so it can be fermented…

So I looked at the brewing process and started asking, “what is causing digestion to happen?”

I would add water with minerals to the grains and that’s what kickstarted the digestive process… I highlighted that part and started looking at my diet and wondered… “Do I drink water with minerals?”

At the time, the answer was “NO”…

I actually didn’t like water… and if I drank any water, it would just be filtered water, but I didn’t add minerals…

It was pretty shocking to think that I had never thought of adding minerals to my water… and I was in disbelief thinking “no way this can actually work… it sounds too simple!”

… but I started incorporating this to my day to day and sure enough, within a few days, I noticed a huge improvement in my digestion… I started having regular bowel movements and noticed a boost of energy…

All by drinking water with minerals (from naturally mineralized salt….) all completely natural…

I went back my my brewing background and wondered what else could I apply that would help me get my energy back… the next clue came to me… I didn’t just add water, the water had to be at a certain temperature to activate enzymes… I looked at the body and suddenly it clicked…

Of course!!

Hypothyroidism brings with it low body temperature… so how can I help raise it…

This is about the only time I’m happy I did get a lab to test my vitamin D levels… it came back low at 22ng/dL… so, I knew that my next goal was to get my vitamin D levels back to normal… this is when I started learning about how unnatural and bad supplements are…

I started looking into vitamin D supplements wondering what they are made out of… some are made by taking sheep’s woold and placing it under UV light to get “cholecalciferol” which they call D3… this is lab made, not natural, which is why they give you a dose like 3,000 to 5,000 IUs…

… but that’s not what I was looking for… because as a beer brewer, I knew that brewer’s yeast, a probiotic, is what made B vitamins in the fermentation process… naturally my question then was, is there a probiotic that makes vitamin D? or is there a fermented food or beverage that contains vitamin D…

The answer is yes!!

I stumbled upon Fermented Cod Liver Oil (FLCO) + Butter Oil and learned that it is a salt resistant lactobacillus that ferments fats to make vitamin D… unlike vitamin D3 supplements, FCLO is a traditional fermented food that’s completely natural… there is no dose because the vitamin D it contains is completely bioavailable… it doesn’t require the body to do anything unlike vitamin D3, which requires the body to break that down…

That’s the catch 22 with low vitamin D… it is directly correlated with the strength of your immune system (your digestive system)… the lower the levels the weaker your digestive system…

… as I started boosting my vitamin D, I noticed many things from improved digestion and better sleep…

Drinking water with minerals had already improved my digestion some, but this took it to the next level…

You can imagine I was over the moon… I was finally feeling like myself again…

Vitamin D was such a game changer, because I learned that it is a pro-hormone… it’s a raw material that your body uses for hormone production… this is what no one tells you…

They’ll say that if your thyroid can’t produce thyroid hormone you’ll need to be on medication for life… but they don’t ask you “have you checked your vitamin D levels?”…

… and if they are low, are you taking synthetic vitamin D3 supplements or natural vitamin D from foods like FCLO?

There’s subtle, yet immense difference in those two approaches and that’s what I’ve been doing since 2013 when I started experimenting with ways to get my thyroid back to normal the natural way…
