The problem is that the internet is plagued with useless regurgitated information that talks about the same supplement ingredients and dietary changes… if you’ve tried any of them, you know that they don’t work long term…

Natural Ways to Treat Hypothyroidism That Don’t Work
Most of the advice online hangs on the premise that the thyroid produces T4 hormone primarily, and that the liver is what converts that T4 into the active thyroid hormone T3… all true and good information to know…
They then claim that if you simply add Selenium to your diet, that everything will be fixed… and that’s when all these thyroid support supplement companies line up to tell you about their special selenium formula mixed with their secret formulation that includes other ingredients such as:
- L-Tyrosine
- Bladderwrack
- Kelp
- Curcumin
- Piperine
- Zinc
- Ashwagandha
- Schisandra Berry
- Iron
- etc.
You get the point… the supplement names are cheesy like Thyro Support, Thyroid Alive, Thyrogard, Thyrosol, Thyroid Synergy, etc… so they are easy to spot so you can avoid them…
Why would you want to avoid selenium based thyroid supplements?
… because Selenium doesn’t address the real issue.
Selenium is supposed to get rid of free radicals… think of free radicals as dirty fluid leaking from factory machines… buying selenium supplements is like hiring a bunch more janitors to come clean up the mess instead of fixing the machines that are leaking the dirty fluid. No matter how much selenium you take, you’ll never be able to hire enough janitors, they will burn out and you’ll keep hiring non-stop… (read: you’ll be forever dependent on these supplements)…
What’s worse is that selenium doesn’t work on its own… taking too much selenium can create imbalances with other minerals like zinc and others… taking too much selenium can worsen hypothyroidism symptoms like:
- Hair Loss
- Brittle Nails
- Garlic-like breath odor
- Gastroinstestinal upset (nausea, diarrhea)
- and others…
How to Naturally Treat Hypothyroidism – What Really Works
If there’s one thing these thyroid supplement companies get right is the idea that fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, and other symptoms are not just a thyroid problem…
Diet is the only way you can naturally treat hypothyroidism… because taking supplements is not natural…
… but when I say diet, I’m not talking about the typical diet changes you’ll read about for low thyroid which are restrictive diets…
The most common diet advice is to go sugar free, gluten free, dairy free…
… or you are told to eat iodine-rich foods, selenium-rich foods, etc.
Here’s why that doesn’t work and what to do instead…
When you cut out a food group like dairy, you are actually making your body deficient in nutrients it needs to produce hormones… not just thyroid hormone, but all hormones…
Dairy has three important ingredients needed for hormone production: saturated fat, cholesterol, and vitamin D…
Without these nutrients, your body will not be able to produce thyroid hormones… but there is a caveat…
Not all dairy is created equal…
There are two types of dairy…
- Store bought pasteurized A1 milk
- Local A2 raw milk
Most people consume the former, which is a highly inflammatory milk (A1)… that is the type of dairy that creates free radicals, which is why your body becomes deficient in minerals like selenium… and that’s also why cutting out pasteurized A1 milk seems to work at first… because you are getting rid of the cause of inflammation…
… but you are creating a new problem that you’re becoming deficient in other needed nutrients that you would get from local A2 raw milk….

Is There a Natural Way to Treat Hypothyroidism?
When people ask this question, what they are really wanting to know is “can I get my energy back and lose weight?”… which is very different than treating hypothyroidism… because fixing your thyroid is not how you get your energy back…
Getting more energy has little to do with your thyroid and more to do with your gut flora… your gut microbes are the ones responsible for turning food energy into energy that your body can use…
Their ability to give you energy depends on your gut environment… if your gut is toxic, then your gut microbes, also known as probiotics, will not be able to digest food for you… which explains the reason why so many people with fatigue often have gas, bloating and constipation… their gut is a mess…
… and it’s also why buying probiotic supplements is as useless as buying selenium-based supplements…
