How to Fix Hypothyroidism

I still remember the day when my doctor said “there is nothing you can do about it… you’ll have to take hormones for the rest of your life…”

In his mind there was nothing I could do to fix hypothyroidism…

… but I couldn’t just accept that as my faith and live the rest of my life feeling miserable…

I didn’t know how I was going to do it, but I knew that I was not going to continue to live and not even try to do something about it… I decided I was going to figure something out even if that’s what I did the rest of my life.

First thing I did was to look up natural remedies to treat hypothyroidism… and as I started meeting others who were on the same journey, they too shared the same experience…

Others shared with me “I had to pay over $7,000 not including labs and supplements, and a diet so strict, I couldn’t stick with it”

I was starting to lose hope, but I couldn’t give up…

How I discovered what works to get rid of thyroid fatigue

I remember waking up, having to grab on to walls to make my way to the bathroom… I could live like this… always feeling like I’m about to faint…

My first breakthrough came when I started looking into why I was gassy, bloated and constipated… I found that yeast overgrowth was the reason why I had these issues going on… and this is what gave me a clue that my issues were not just thyroid related…

Yeast is a gut related issue, not a thyroid issue… but this impacts your thyroid because if you have yeast overgrowth, then chances are you are not digesting food properly… if you can’t digest protein, then you can’t get essential amino acids like Tyrosine, which the body needs to produce thyroid hormone…

If you can’t digest fat properly, then your body may have a hard time burning fat or losing weight…

… but what really got my attention more than anything was the word “Yeast”… because my background is in brewing beer and I knew about yeast…

I knew there was a difference between wild yeast (like yeast candida) and brewer’s yeast… wild yeast is toxic, but brewer’s yeast is a probiotic…

The first time I heard about yeast candida was in a beer brewing book… it is a contaminant you don’t want in your beer… and that’s when I realized that I don’t want that contaminant in my gut for the same reason!

I was blown away to think that one of the reasons why I had yeast overgrowth had to do with chronic dehydration… it made complete sense… as a beer brewer, I drank a lot of beer and very little water, so no surprise there…

I was, however, shocked at the thought that not one single doctor ever asked me about my hydration… was it overlooked or assumed that I was properly hydrated? or do they not understand that without hydration, your body can’t grow healthy gut flora?

Either way… I now had something I could try to see if I felt better…

What to do to feel better if you have hypothyroidism

I started making myself hydrating water using principles I learned from brewing… I added minerals to my water using ionic magnesium and SOLE salt which together contain a full spectrum of minerals that your body needs to properly hydrate…

Within a few weeks I noticed that my skin was no longer dry, ashy or itchy…

My digestion improved significantly, and I wasn’t as gassy, bloated or constipated… this alone didn’t fix my hypothyroidism… but I felt so much better!

I had more energy and didn’t feel like I was about to pass out all the time…

It was the boost of confidence I needed to continue to research and find more ways to fix my thyroid…

Ironically, the more I looked into what I could do, the more I realized that my thyroid didn’t need fixing as much as my gut, liver, kidneys, adrenals and gallbladder… my thyroid issues were downstream from these, so by placing my focus upstream I started to feel better…

My next improvement came about because I couldn’t stand the brain fog… that was the worst…

I would be tired all day, but then I would lay down and suddenly my brain would start going… my anxiety would kick in about being to fall asleep and stay asleep… and I couldn’t fall asleep… I was tired, but wired…

By then, I knew not to follow conventional advice… most people take melatonin, ambien or other sleeping pills… but those just knock you out and don’t give you restful sleep…

To get truly restful sleep, you need to optimize your vitamin D levels…

This is where things got interesting… No doctor ever asked me about my vitamin D levels… I went to the VA to get labs and the doctor there was hesitant to test me… she said “the results from this lab won’t tell me anything…”

… but I insisted and got my vitamin D levels checked…

The results came back at 22 ng/dL, which is low… and this got me started on the next big piece that really helped me get better…

The doctor tried to put me on a vitamin D3 supplement, but that was a big “No” for me… because I knew one thing about vitamins… probiotics make vitamins through fermentation…

There was no way I was going to take a synthetic supplement when I could instead get a natural source of vitamin D… I declined the supplement and went for fermented cod liver oil

What’s crazy is that when you share or ask doctors about fermented cod liver oil, they will tell you that it’s not FDA approved and so they can’t recommend it…

… but you will find that if you take fermented cod liver oil, your sleep will improve drastically… something that no amount of vitamin D3 IUs can do…

Even more important to note is that vitamin D3 supplements require a dose… you can only take 3,000 to 5,000 IU’s because if you take more, then you can get vitamin D toxicity…

… and that is because it’s a supplement and not a natural source of vitamin D…

Fermented cod liver oil, on the other hand is a natural source of vitamin D… there is no dose… you can consume high amounts and you don’t get vitamin D toxicity…

When I started improving my vitamin D levels, my sleep started to improve. I was getting deep REM sleep and was waking up feeling refreshed and restored… no more brain fog!

Icing on the cake?

My hair was no longer falling out!

Proper hydration and vitamin D both have one thing in common… they were both helping me create an environment for probiotics to grow healthy in my gut.

I shifted my attention completely away from my thyroid and started focusing on the health of my probiotics by using knowledge I had learned from the brewing process…

I realized that there were 5 things I was doing to grow healthy probiotics… these are the same things you would do if you were to grow a plant or a tree…

You need to improve:

  • Hydration
  • Minerals
  • pH
  • Temperature
  • Probiotics (food & diversity)
