If you are looking for advice on how to control your thyroid, then chances are you’ve seen, tried and found the common advice everyone seems to talk about simply doesn’t work…
- Iodine-rich foods
- Selenium-rich foods
- Sugar free
- Gluten free
- Dairy free
- No processed foods
- Manage stress
- Get sufficient sleep
- etc.
Seriously though… get sufficient sleep?
This used to piss me off because I was tired all day, pushing through after dinner… but when my head hit the pillow, I suddenly felt awake… tired but wired… I could not fall asleep… I would toss and turn all night…
If I wasn’t getting sufficient sleep, it wasn’t from lack of trying… it was because my body was not producing enough melatonin (the sleeping hormone)… this is what gave me the clue I needed to understand that it wasn’t just a thyroid hormone problem… it was a general hormone problem…
I was feeling anxious and depressed…
I thought it was because I felt miserable all the time… but it turns out my body wasn’t producing enough serotonin and dopamine (the feel good happy hormones)…
If you want to control your thyroid, then you need to look at the bigger picture…
What Most People Get Wrong About Thyroid Health
Without going to deep into the topic, I have to point out that the way doctors are trained about the thyroid is pretty sketchy at best…
It starts out with the definition of hypothyroidism which is typically generalized as “underactive thyroid”…
This is not always the case…. the thyroid could be producing enough thyroid hormone T4, but the liver must convert that into the active form T3… if your liver isn’t functioning properly, then your body won’t get thyroid hormone T3, but the thyroid will be the one to blame…
This is why everyone is always talking about iodine deficiency and then push their iodine-rich supplements… but this is yet another mistake… there’s a widespread belief that iodine deficiency is the root cause of hypothyroidism… but that’s rarely the case…
The NIH talks about this…
In the United States, autoimmune thyroid disease (ie, Hashimoto thyroiditis) is the most common cause of hypothyroidism, but globally, lack of iodine in the diet is the most common cause (*Source: NIH)
I don’t know about you, but I find it extremely weird that everywhere else except the United States, lack of iodine is the cause, while in the United States Hashimoto’s is the most common cause of hypothyroidism…
I question both, but I think we’re on to something if we focus on the autoimmune aspect…
Why a strong immune system is the best way to control your thyroid function
What makes hormones in your body?
What takes energy from food and makes it available for your body?
What grows hair?
What keeps antibodies from attacking the cells in your body?
The answer to all these questions is simple:
Probiotics…
Your immune system depends primarily on the health of the probiotics that live in your gut…
If your thyroid isn’t producing enough thyroid hormone, then you have to start by looking at what are you feeding it first…
Forget iodine-rich foods…
To make hormones, your body needs saturated fat, cholesterol, and lots of minerals (salt)…
The best foods that have those nutrients happen to be the same foods doctors tell you to avoid… hmmm… I wonder why that is?
Dairy such as raw milk, egg yolks and red meat are some of the best foods to eat for hormone production… but this is where we begin to uncover the real problem you could be facing if you have low hormone production…
Can you digest the food you eat?
If you have a weak immune system, then chances are you struggle with digestion…
If you have gas, bloating, constipation or diarrhea, then that’s a sign that you have a weak immune system… it means the probiotics in your gut are weak… which is why, I believe that the best way to control your thyroid is to strengthen the probiotics in your gut…
Step One – Strengthen the probiotics in your gut to control your thyroid
Keyword here is to strengthen the probiotics in your gut… this is not the same as taking probiotics.
Probiotics become weak due to the environment in your gut… if your gut is toxic, dehydrated or if you don’t feed them the right nutrients, they will become weak…
When probiotics become weak, it gives room for pathogenic bacteria to grow in your gut… this is where antibodies come from… pathogenic bacteria release digestive enzymes similar to probiotics… the difference is that digestive enzymes from probiotics digest food for you, but digestive enzymes from pathogenic bacteria will try to digest you from the inside out…
If your thyroid is under attack, it’s not from the probiotics in your gut… it’s under attack from the bad bacteria in your gut…
So you have to look at what allowed bad bacteria to grow in your gut to begin with…
The most common reason why bad bacteria grows is dehydration… low water and minerals creates an environment that weakens probiotics, but allows bad bacteria to enter…
Bad bacteria is not necessarily “bad”… it’s just doing its job which is to decompose dead cells… cells need water to live, so if you dehydrate them, they will need to decompose…
That’s why proper hydration is the first step to controlling your thyroid…
Step Two – Give Your Body the Nutrients Probiotics Need
We are so used to eating food based on taste and what we like to eat… so this may sound like a foreign concept, but when you eat food, you are not really feeding your body… you are feeding probiotics…
So you have to ask, what do probiotics eat?
The answer is simple:
Minerals…
Minerals are what probiotics use to transfer energy…
If you don’t give your body minerals, then probiotics won’t be able to give you energy… they won’t be able to digest food for you… and they won’t be able to produce hormones for you…
Mineral depletion is the biggest reason why people end up with weak immune systems…
In the 1924 iodized salt was introduced to the marketplace claiming that people were iodine deficient and needed to “supplement”
Interestingly enough, Europe banned iodine on September 2022 because it is considered an endocrine disruptor…
Iodized salt stripped salt of all the minerals your body needs for a strong immune system and replaced those minerals with an endocrine disruptor…
Real salt, is naturally high in minerals, which is the primary food of your immune system… are you consuming enough mineralized salt? or have you been duped into thinking iodized salt is good for you?
Step Three – Help Your Body Absorb Minerals to Control Your Thyroid
Water and minerals are the raw materials that your body needs to digest food… the only other thing standing in the way of you being able to produce hormones is your ability to absorb those minerals…
To absorb minerals, you need strong probiotics… and the best way to measure the strength of your probiotics is by your vitamin D levels…
If your vitamin D levels are low, then you will struggle to absorb minerals…
If you raise your vitamin D levels, your body will be able to absorb nutrients from food and produce hormones… because vitamin D is technically a pro-hormone… it’s like a hormone template that your body uses to make other hormones including melatonin, the sleeping hormone…
You can get a vitamin D test done to find out your levels… I was low at 22 ng/dL… you’re supposed to be closer to 55+ ng/dL…
… but there’s a better way to measure your vitamin D levels and that is by the quality of your sleep…
Remember how I mentioned I couldn’t fall asleep to save my life?
Well, that was because I had low vitamin D… the moment I raised my vitamin D levels, my sleep started to improve and my body started to produce hormones naturally…
This is what doctors won’t tell you about how to control your thyroid…
… and they have yet another trap for you…
They know you’ll be reading up on vitamin D… so they will offer you “their” vitamin D which is lab made… and how can you tell if it’s lab made?
… because it will come with a dose… 3,000 to 5,000 IU’s typically… sometimes higher…
They give you a dose because it’s toxic…
Natural vitamin D is not toxic and doesn’t require a dose… so you might ask, where do you find natural vitamin D?
Well… if I haven’t made it clear, probiotics produce vitamins through the fermentation process…
To get natural vitamis, you have to turn your attention to fermented foods and beverages… the best source of natural vitamin D we’ve found comes from fermented cod liver oil…
This has been by far the most important food we recommend after water and minerals (hydration)… it’s part of the formula we use to help our body produce thyroid hormone naturally without relying on diet or pills…
