I don’t know about you, but when I was told that I was going to have to take medication for the rest of my life I felt this urge to look elsewhere…

It wasn’t so much that I had to take medication for life that triggered me… it was that they said “there’s nothing you can do about it…”

I was thinking to myself “like, really? no one has figured this out?”

So I started digging into this whole situation… wondering, why do I feel tired all the time? why is my hair falling out? why do I feel like I got hit by a Mack truck when I wake up?

Am I ever going to feel like myself again?

So I started doing what most people do… I started following the advice most people get when going through this…

  • Eat iodine-rich foods
  • Eat selenium-rich foods
  • Cut out gluten
  • Cut out dairy
  • Cut out sugar
  • etc.

I tried just about any thyroid supplement with iodine, selenium, ashwagandha, etc., and went on all kinds of diets from vegan, to keto, paleo, and more…

I would feel better initially, but after a couple of weeks I was back to feeling tired and if I lost any weight, I’d gain it all back… I felt defeated…

Something did work and I figured I just needed to figure out how to extend that “feel better” period…

That is when I doubled down and started to finally understand what was really happening…

This whole time, I was under the impression that my thyroid wasn’t working because of low iodine… but then I read something that made my jaw drop…

Iodine deficiency is extremely rare in the United States… and that hypothyroidism is caused by too much iodine in the diet…

Well hot dang… here I was thinking that I needed to eat iodine-rich foods and all kinds of iodine boosting thyroid support supplements not realizing it was making things worse…

This is when I decided to start looking for natural remedies for hypothyroidism and became very skeptical of any supplement or diet that mentioned iodine-rich anything to help…

First thing I did was to look at my laundry list of things I wanted to get rid of…

Fatigue

Hair loss

Weight gain

Brain fog

Gas, Bloating & Constipation

(… and too many to mention…)

As I was thinking of this, I had a major epiphany that changed my entire outlook on health… my background is in brewing beer and one thing I knew from brewing beer was that the only way I could digest barley starch into sugar was to have clean water with minerals…

“No way!!” I thought…

Can I really improve just by adding minerals to my water and making sure my drinking water is clean?

It made too much sense that I had no choice but to try it out…

I began to experiment without expecting too much and lo and behold, I started to notice that my skin wasn’t as dry… it was a simple improvement, but I kept going… after a few more days, I noticed my digestion improved…

… and it made sense!

Improving my digestion meant that my body was now turning food into energy I could use… this didn’t fix my hypothyroidism nor my fatigue… but I definitely felt a boost of energy… so this whole idea that I couldn’t do anything about it started to tumble…

I wasn’t as constipated and my bloating went down significantly… I no longer looked like I was five months pregnant…

How to Get Your Thyroid Working Again

This clue led me to the most important principle I can share with you… what happened when I started drinking water with minerals was that I started to improve the environment in my gut for probiotics to be healthy…

Why is this important?

… because they are the ones that give you energy…. probiotics are what make hormones for you…

I used to think that the thyroid gland made the thyroid hormones your body needs, but the thyroid gland makes a precursor to the thyroid hormone you need… it makes T4 which is an inactive form of thyroid hormone… T4 hormone needs to be converted to the active form T3 and probiotics are part of that process along with the liver…

Without probiotics in your gut your body can’t make other hormones like melatonin, the sleeping hormone…

Probiotics are what digest food for you… without that digestion, your body wouldn’t be able to get the amino acid Tyrosine from protein… and Tyrosine is the building block of thyroid hormone… The “T” in T3 stands for Tyrosine…

So, the more I looked into this the more I realized that helping the probiotics in my gut grow strong and healthy was the key to many of the issues I was dealing with… I had to work on creating an environment where probiotics would thrive… and this was the most natural way I had found to do this…

The next thing that helped me out was to improve my sleep… I didn’t know what was causing my sleep to be so messed up at the time… all I knew was that I was exhausted all day, but the moment my head hit the pillow I would catch a second wind and my mind would just start racing and I couldn’t fall asleep… I would wake up throughout the night and was lucky if I’d get more than 2-3 hours of continuous sleep…

I was working with a doctor at the time and got tested for vitamin D deficiency and my test came back low at 22ng/dL…

This got me to look into vitamin D and found out that vitamin D is technically a pro-hormone… it’s like a template for other hormones… without vitamin D, you can’t make other hormones and that throws all your hormones out of balance…

… and the most important insight was that vitamin D levels are directly correlated with the health of your immune system… your probiotics… the lower your vitamin D levels, the weaker your probiotics… the higher your vitamin D levels, the stronger your immune system…

Well, mine were low, so no wonder I was getting sick so easily…

This led me to another pivotal moment… because there’s one thing I knew from brewing beer… probiotics make vitamins and other key nutrients during fermentation… which means that fermented foods and beverages are the best way to replenish vitamins when you are low…

I started looking around for fermented foods that would have vitamin D, and I found fermented cod liver oil (with butter oil)… At the time, I was only looking to get my vitamin D levels back to normal… but the pleasant surprise was that my sleep started to improve…

I didn’t know vitamin D was tied to quality of sleep… but I started to sleep through the night and after a few days I started to have vivid dreams… I started waking up feeling rested and refreshed… my energy levels went up another notch…

I’ve since been documenting everything I’ve tried to get more energy using nothing but natural remedies and been sharing with others to see if they too experience the same improvements….

How to get more energy with Hypothyroidism

The key to get energy is learning how to create an environment in your gut for probiotics to grow… minerals are just one of nine steps I use to create this environment…

Sadly, most doctors don’t have a clue about this… thyroid supplements, and programs that promise to “fix your thyroid” don’t understand this either…

I am not a doctor… I only know about this because I was an avid home brewer and studied fermentation, though not for health purposes… I was not into health back then… I was only growing probiotics (brewer’s yeast) to make beer…

… but when I learned that probiotics are what make hormones… all bets were off… I needed to try making the probiotics in my gut as healthy as I could for myself, even if no one else followed…
