This was me in 2012:
Back then, feeling tired (especially when hungover) and getting a beer belly seemed logical. Almost expected of me... because I was a beer brewer.
However, I’ve always had a thing for being healthy, watching what I eat and being active.
Being fatigued all the time made me not feel like myself.
I never had to worry about my weight until I bought a new set of jeans size 34 (up from size 32) and found out just a couple months later those didn’t fit!
… but weight gain wasn’t really what made me look into my health…
I had zero energy.
I found myself struggling to stay awake during the day.
Coming home after work, I'd be too exhausted to move.
Even working out became a struggle because recovering took longer than usual…
Again, I thought I was simply aging…
I even quit drinking beer, but when I found that beer wasn’t the cause, I began to ask questions…
My skin had become extremely dry. Every morning when I woke up I would look in the mirror and see my face peeling… my skin was ashy… like it was the beginning of psoriasis or something…
My body temperature was cold.
I remember being ashamed of shaking hands with people I’d meet because they’d always make a remark about how cold my hands were.
I used to always have warm hands!
Something was definitely wrong, but I had no clue…
One day, while taking a shower, it happened.
I was lathering up my hair and something felt weird. I began to feel this “texture” on my hands and when I opened my eyes to look at my hands I was shocked to find hair all over my hands and all over the bathtub!!
…. And so my journey began.
I didn't understand how I could be so exhausted all day, but when I tried to fall asleep at night, suddenly my anxiety would kick in and keep me awake... I felt tired, but wired.
After talking to other people with hypothyroidism, I was discouraged to learn that they’d been on medication for over 5 years (one had been on it for 20 years!!!) and still had not gotten better.
Are you kidding me??
Was hypothyroidism some sort of cruel fate dealt to me?
No way… I was not going to go down just like that. Not without putting up a fight.
I began to try EVERYTHING.
I was determined to do whatever it took to get more energy and feel better.
As if everything else wasn’t enough, I had begun to develop digestive issues.
Everything I ate seemed to make my stomach bubbly… at first I figured it was because I was eating mostly at breweries (pub food)…
I knew this was not going to be an easy battle when I became that weird guy who ordered a salad, “skip the dressing, skip the croutons” and still had digestive issues.
On came the diets…
Iodine-rich foods
Selenium-rich foods
Zinc-rich foods
Gluten-free diet
Sugar-free diet
Dairy-free die
Paleo diet
Keto diet
Gaps diet
Raw Vegan
Juicing!
I tried all the supplements they told me I needed from iodine, iron, selenium, ashwagandha, thyroid support herbs... nothing worked...
I was frustrated because no matter how hard I tried to diet, the scale kept going up and I felt defeated.
I was at a point where EVERYTHING became suspect!
One day, I saw a video of one doctor explaining hypothyroidism… and what he said gave me an insight that led me to the root cause!
One of the things that stuck out was that hypothyroidism robs your body from iodine… iodine is needed to produce stomach acid… stomach acid is needed to digest protein...
The key concept that stood out for me was having poor digestion...
It explained all the gas, bloating and constipation... it explained why my body was having such a hard time digesting any type of protein…
... and why I became sensitive to gluten and other proteins…
That’s why I had so much “inflammation” and was borderline IBS…
… and it gave me the clue that I may not have as much fat as I thought… rather my body was filled with mucin from inflammation.
Being a home brewer, a knew a thing or two about digestive enzymes... I couldn't believe I knew this for brewing purposes but never thought of applying the information for my own digestion.
I started borrowing some of the principles I learned from brewing like knowing that digestive enzymes break down protein in grains. So the question then became, where do I get protein digestive enzymes for my body?
I found I could get protein digestive enzymes like bromelain found in pineapple and papain found in papaya.
So, I started testing food combinations and drinking what I call the anti-inflammatory smoothie…
1 cup fresh squeezed organic orange (juice)
1 cup organic papaya
1 cup organic pineapple
… ahhh.
Relief, at last…
Working on improving my digestion did make me feel better!
But it was only the beginning…
I still wanted to learn how to get my thyroid to work!
It took me over seven years of trying all sorts of hippie-dippy stuff asking myself if this is really it…
Could I really use things I learned from brewing about fermentation & probiotics and apply that to fix my energy and low hormone production?
I struggled to accept that because health is what doctors were supposed to know, not me, a beer brewer...
I was getting ready to quit… but everything changed when I learned about combining minerals like ionic magnesium and fermented cod liver oil... (of course the word fermented grabbed my attention.)
For the first time, I saw a significant improvement in my digestion, sleep and my hair loss stopped!
It felt so amazing, it sparked my desire to continue experimenting.

1 quart clean water

... and taking Fermented Cod Liver Oil to improve my sleep.
Sounds weird... but my home brew days taught me about fermentation and the importance of minerals... they are needed to get energy and produce hormones.
I remember needing minerals in my brewing water in order to DIGEST starch in grains and turn it into sugar... so I started researching minerals in more depth...
It turns out minerals are conductive, which is important to know if you want to get more energy...
Picture a double AA battery. It stores energy, right?
... but in order to use the energy inside the battery, you need a conductive mineral like copper, right?... which is why you see copper wire in electronics.
Well, that's how minerals work in your body... whatever energy is stored in the cells of your body can only be used if you have conductive minerals like copper.
